Christopher Columbus Impact on The World

When reading “the last hours of sunlight” I came up with the conclusion that Christopher Columbus created something similar to a domino effect and it is now catching up with us. “Survival and prosperity both hinge on how much sunlight energy is under your control” as I stated in the previous paragraph Columbus has been known to be the pioneer of the slave trade and he also seems to be a major factor of hunger and despair in many other countries. In 1492 Columbus founded Hispaniola, land of the Taino Indians, and took captive of the Indians that lived there. In a discovered journal it was read “we gathered 1,600 persons of those Indians… we let it be known whoever wanted to take some of them to do so.” This clearly means he was a pioneer in the slave trade. It was also common for Columbus to rape women. As he began to rape women on the regular he began shipping Taino women as slaves to other parts of the world and the commonly known “sex-slave” trade became a booming business. “As a result of the sufferings and hard labor the Indians have chosen suicide.” Upon arrival (1492) there were a reportedly 300,000 Indians on what we now call Haiti and by 1555 every last Taino Indian was dead. Due to the African slave trade to Haiti the trees were cut down to create farmland and now less than one percent of tress cover the Haiti. The impact Columbus left on Haiti has set them back centuries. The average Haitian spends 16 hours a day in search for food, money, and edible trash and you can see the same happening in countries where people were held captive and made to be a part of the slave trade. In today’s world we call these countries “developing” or “third world”  and if they were not invaded they would probably be one of many thriving civilizations.
