The author describes the people who know about
the crisis we are facing as crucial ones. From the reading I have interpreted
the crucial ones as being the ones who have the power to change the world, fix
the problems we are facing, and influence younger generations to take charge.
One way the crucial one can do to influence younger generations is to not be
careless and show mercy and compassion. Due to becoming a nation that is built
off of materialistic values and consumerism we have lost our sense of community
and sense of being genuine to one another. As we grow we forget the power of
mecry and compassion has on the human race. “On some level we are al connected.
When you save the life of another living being…you are putting into the air of
saving lives.” (pg. 242) the author brings up an encounter with a Cree Native
American in which he believes in what we now know as the golden rule “treat
people the way you want to be treated”. The Native American lifestyle and
values have been around for centuries and it seems as if their way of thinking
and living collectively would have extended their longevity on earth but due to
genocides and Europeans trying to create “civilizations” we now only have
casinos and the golden rule to teach us the ways of the earth. By showing
compassion and mercy we are reassuring to people to not be ashamed or scared to
help and be kind to one another.
